To make sure each gemstone reaches its full potential, lapidaries and jewelers employ a variety of techniques. The following are some key terms we may use to describe a gem's visual appearance as it interacts with light.

Scintillation

Brilliance 

Is the play of light (reflections from a polished surface) that causes a gem to sparkle as its relative position to either the viewer or the source of illumination changes. 

Is the amount of light that is reflected from a gem's surface. Cutting plays a key role to this visual appearance. 

Is the amount of light (body color) that is reflected from a gem's interior. The gem's optical properties, cutting, color, transparency, clarity, polish, luster and wear all add to the brilliance of a gemstone. Brilliance
